Seawood School - Code of Conduct
Seawood School’s Mission Statement is “to provide a caring and secure environment where home, school and community work together to become, to the best of their abilities, contributing citizens in a just society.” To accomplish this goal, we need consistently applied rules requiring some degree of flexibility. These rules comply with the “3 R” policy of School District 8 – Respect for you, Respect for me, Responsibility for what I do.
Respect for You
- A student’s language should show self-respect and respect for others. The use of foul language, either spoken, written or gestured, is unacceptable.
- As a sign of respect and courtesy, students will remove hats when entering the school.
- The school telephone is to be used for emergency reasons only, such as sickness or accidents.
- Listen quietly in halls and classrooms during announcements so everyone will hear what may affect them during the day.
- To facilitate safety in the school and on the playground, students are expected to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner. Wrestling, shoving, tripping, biting, spitting, play-fighting and fighting of any kind are not appropriate behaviors. Intimidation and harassment will not be tolerated.
- For students’ safety, students are not to play in, or walk through, the parking area.
Respect for Me
- All personal belongings are to be labeled to assist in identifying lost items.
- It is the parent’s/guardian’s responsibility to ensure that each child arrives at school on time, prepared for the day, with completed homework, lunch, and school supplies.
- In accordance with District “scent-free” policy, there will be NO perfume or cologne permitted.
Responsibility for What I Do

- Students will help to promote a clean school.
- It is expected that students try to do their best work all the time in all subject areas.
- Due to the damage caused by gum, students are not permitted to chew gum at school.

Seawood School -
Discipline
Seawood School maintains a positive learning environment where staff, students and parents cooperate in a safe, caring environment. All students have the right to fell safe in school, on school property, and on their way to and from school. Students also have the responsibility to always give their best effort and to behave in an acceptable manner. All students are made aware of classroom and playground rules and expected behaviors early in the year. These rules and expectations are reinforced continually throughtout the year. Teacher and/or the principal will deal with students who misbehave. This may involve detention, taking away children's priviledges, telephone calls to the parents, meeting with parents and/or disciplinary letters. Children who continue to misbehave will receive up to 2 warning letters before being suspended from school. Serious offenses such as fighting, physical aggression, swearing, and extreme disrespect will result in automatic suspension from school. No warning letter will be issued in these cases. |

Re: Student Threat/Risk Assessment
School District 8 is committed to creating and maintaining an environment in schools where students, parents and others feel safe. In order to enhance safety and security the district has been involved in intensive training for school administrators, guidance counsellors, school psychologists, and district staff. A policy and protocol for responding to student threats in a multidisciplinary manner has been established, as part of a comprehensive school safety program. This multidisciplinary approach involves the participation of multiple community partners, when necessary, including but not limited to: Social Development, Mental Health, Saint John City Police and RCMP. Together, we are committed to keeping our schools safe.
The new policy and protocol requires trained school staff to complete a “threat assessment” in all cases of students making significant threats to harm themselves or others. The purpose of the threat assessment process is to use the best knowledge, skill and experience available to assess high-risk threatening behaviours so that appropriate interventions can be identified to protect individuals from harm and ensure a climate of safety in schools and the community. Please be assured that the principal will be taking measures to deal with all known threats / high risk behaviours in a positive and proactive manner. If the principal invites you to a meeting to discuss safety concerns about your own child, please be assured that policy is being followed and that the goal is safety, not punishment.
School District 8 will not accept “no response” to a serious threat. To keep school communities safe and caring; staff, parents, students and community members having knowledge of a threat or having grounds to believe there is a potential for high risk behaviour should report the information to the principal. Our goal is to respond to all threats in a professional manner that provides for a healthy and caring learning environment.
We are proud to be able to provide this level of support to our school communities. To learn more about the Student Threat Assessment policy, please contact your school principal or visit our website www.district8.nbed.nb.ca (Policy Section).
Sincerely,
Susan Tipper
